Dalry playground with climbing wall, balance beams, climbing frame and slide

{Edinburgh} Dalry Community Park

We’re always excited to visit a new playground, so when I saw that the new playground at Dalry Community Park was finally ready, during a trip to Lidl earlier this week, it didn’t take much convincing to persuade my younger son to go and explore it together.

The new playground is part of the project to “transform public spaces along a route between Roseburn and the Union Canal, creating a ‘green corridor’ and cycleway and bringing disused areas back into community use.” (source) Previously very sad and neglected looking, with only a few pieces of play equipment, the park had been fenced off since February whilst major improvements took place. It’s been worth the wait, because the results are great, delivering a brilliant new multi-purpose play area for all ages.

At one end of the park, there’s a basket swing with some musical stepping stones either side. Balance beams and outdoor gym equipment sit alongside a climbing wall, which leads to a big climbing net structure with a tube slide. A second climbing net spreads out in a space next to some balancing spheres and a couple of small trampolines, and for the little ones there’s also a specific toddler area with some huts for creative play and climbing opportunities.

Dalry Community Park Ball Court

A new ball court, with goals and hoops, completes the revamped park. There’s also a picnic table, and plenty of benches. Apparently the new park was designed in consultation with Dalry Primary School.

How to Get There

Dalry Community Park is sandwiched between West Approach Road and the Dalry Lidl carpark, which is accessed by steps leading down from the park. The park can also be accessed from Dalry Road on the west side, and on the east side via Orwell Terrace/ the Telfer Subway, and if you’re coming from the Fountainbridge side then there’s a brand new crossing on West Approach Road leading over the subway and directly to the park.

The nearest bus stops are on West Approach Road, right next to the park entrance/ new crossing (Lothian Buses 22 & 30), and outside Lidl on Dalry Road (Lothian Buses 2, 3, 4, 25, 33 & 44). There are a couple more bus routes that stop at Fountain Park (Lothian Buses 1, 34 & 35), which is also just a few minutes walk away.
